Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s security team now includes a highly secured Mercedes Maybach automobile. Previously, the Prime Minister traveled in a secure Range Rover Vogue and a Toyota Land Cruiser.
The new Mercedes Maybach S 650 Guard is touted to be the top of the line among bullet- and blast-proof armored vehicles for VIPs globally. According to sources, the vehicle was recently bought as part of the PM’s cavalcade, and the PM was last seen travelling around in it during Russian President Vladimir Putin’s two-day visit to New Delhi, which began on December 6.
“The security of the PM must be reviewed on a regular basis.” “Vehicles are a part of the process,” remarked an official.
According to sources, the vehicle was obtained following numerous rounds of discussions between the firm and the SPG, during which the latter not only analyzed each defensive element of the car but even demanded some changes to meet the demands of PM’s protection.
The ballistic protection level of the S 650 Guard is VR10. It is the highest certification quality offered to civilians, assuring all-around security. According to industry insiders, the automobile is constructed of a reinforced body shell and glass housing that can survive high explosive charges as well as bullets fired from military assault guns.
The car is also able to deal with invisible threats such as smoke, irritating gases, or even a gas assault, in which case the emergency fresh air system kicks in, safeguarding the occupants within.
Rather of being retrofitted on the vehicle, the protective parts are fully incorporated into the vehicle’s body shell during a specific production process. This provides the automobile the appearance and feel of a standard series production model.
The automobile has a self-sealing gasoline tank and a built-in fire extinguisher. The chairs include a massage feature that allows passengers to choose from treatments ranging from ‘high intensity’ to ‘hot relaxing back’ to ‘classic massage.’ It also has a 360-degree camera.
The automobile is 5.45 m long with a wheelbase of 3.36 m and is powered by a 6 litre V12 engine providing 650 horse power. The vehicle’s massive doors are opened and closed by an electric motor.
While the exact cost of the PM’s car is unknown, industry insiders say it might cost more than Rs 12 crore.
